Shared Hosting

If you are not driving much traffic to your site then the best hosting package to start off with is shared hosting. This is very cheap, starting at around $5 a month and will be ample for anyone starting out with a new website. This certainly beats paying over $200 a month for your own dedicated server.

Of course, the downside is that other people will be hosting their website on the same server. This means if one person gets a ton of traffic or does something to mess the server up it will affect everyone. For this reason you will occasionally see your website go down from time to time. But if you are with a good host they will address it very quickly and also have lots of protection measures to minimize people doing something that can damage the integrity of the server.

Once your website starts earning a decent amount of money you will want to consider switching to your own virtual private server or even a dedicated server.

Virtual private servers (VPS) and Dedicated Servers

A Virtual private server (VPS) is a marketing term, used by Internet hosting services to refer to a virtual machine for use exclusively by an individual customer of the service. The term is used to emphasize that the virtual machine, although running in software on the same physical computer as other customers’ virtual machines:

  • is functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer
  • is dedicated to the individual customer’s needs
  • has the privacy of a separate physical computer
  • can be configured to run as a server computer (i.e. to run server software)

The term Virtual Dedicated Server or VDS is used less often for the same concept.

Each virtual server can run its own full‐fledged operating system and can be independently rebooted. The practice of partitioning a single server so that it appears as multiple servers has long been common practice on mainframe computers and mid‐range computers such as the IBM AS/400. It has become more prevalent with the development of virtualization software and technologies for microcomputers.

A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs of the network. For example, some networks require that one computer be set aside to manage communications between all the other computers. A dedicated server could also be a computer that manages printer resources. Note, however, that not all servers are
dedicated. In some networks, it is possible for a computer to act as a server and perform other functions as well.
In the Web hosting business, a dedicated server is typically a rented service. The user rents the server, software and an Internet connection from the Web host.

Using a VPS is great in the beginning, the price is low but when you get more traffic and make more money the safest way to secure this is to get a dedicated server. When renting a VPS you are sharing it with other people, you only need one rotten apple to mess things up for the rest. If he does something stupid and you are on the same server and that server goes down, your site will go down too. This will result in money loss, time and data loss and maybe even traffic. That’s why you can better go for a dedicated server from the moment you are making enough money to pay for it monthly. When you have your dedicated server you are in control of that server and no one else.

Hosting Providers

Getting the right hosting account is very important. The last thing you want is a crap host that doesn’t have all the features you need and is not prepared to help you.

My personal preference is to have a host that:

  • Uses Linux Servers. Linux just means the operating system of your server, I prefer Linux over a Windows server because 99% of the time everything is so much simpler and works properly.
  • Uses cPanel because it is easy to use and I am used to it.
  • Gives you at the very least 3 MySQL databases. These will be used to store information in an organized database on your server such as your blog posts from a wordpress blog.
  • Gives you a few gigabytes of bandwidth. Avoid outrageous claims like unlimited bandwidth as there’s no such thing – they just close your account when there is too much traffic. As a guide 25GB should see you good for at least 50,000 page views if you are not serving videos from your site.
  • A host that can actually handle big traffic. There is a good chance that you will get traffic bursts and you don’t want to be with a host that can’t handle this traffic because they have too many people hosted on one server.
  • Allows you to host multiple domains with them in case you have more than one site.
  • Gives you a decent amount of disk space. This usually is never a problem unless you have a site that is going to host a lot of images and videos.
  • Has brilliant support. Ideally I prefer being able to chat with the support team through instant messaging so I can continue doing my work while they look into a problem. What I don’t like is a support team that always has to pass on your question to their tech team so you have to wait 24 hours for a reply.

Most of the hosting providers will give you 3 options: shared hosting, a virtual private server or a dedicated server. You start with shared hosting for a new website and as the site gets more and more traffic you can switch to a VPS or even a dedicated server.

Examples of hosting providers:
  • GoDaddy Hosting
  • Namecheap Hosting
  • Hostgator Hosting: Hostgator is a very reputable name in the hosting world.
  • Admin.2×4 Hosting: Admin.2×4 reside in Russia so it’s safe to use their hosting. You will have to manage everything on your on if your new to this it could become a little bit difficult.
  • Altushost Hosting: If you want affordable hosting go with Altushost. They protect your information, don’t care for complaints and you are allowed to store duplicate content. The service is great and the price is right this is a no brainer!
  • PRQ Hosting: If you want total anonymity you should go with PRQ for your hosting.

After the setup of your hosting account you will receive a list of nameservers from your hosting company which you will use to redirect your visitors from your domain name to the correct server hosting your website. You can read in this article how you configure the nameservers at one of my favorite domain registrars … Namecheap.

Registering a Domain Name

Most of the time, the first step in creating a presence on the Internet is to register a domain name. Below are some good companies which you can use to register a new domain name. After registering a domain name, you will have to get a good hosting account.

GoDaddy Domain Name Registration: You can ask anyone about Godaddy and you will get almost a 100% positive feedback. However, Godaddy has a long legal notice list and if they catch you doing something illegal you will get kicked from their service. The worst part would be that the original content makers notify Godaddy and that Godaddy gives your personal information to that party. Needless to say that story could end very bad.

Namecheap Domain Name Registration: Almost the same as Godaddy. The same rules apply, but Namecheap is cheaper and the whois protection is free.

Joker Domain Name Registration: Joker domain name registration is a better option because the anonymity is higher. Joker is a bit more expensive than Godaddy and Namecheap.

PRQ Domain Name Registration: A lot of people haven’t heard from this domain registrar. PRQ does the same thing as the other domain registrars but this one is BULLET PROOF. The prices are higher than the other domain registrars but the peace of mind you get from it is priceless. PRQ is founded by one of the owners of the Pirate Bay torrent site and their moto is “we don’t care”. You can buy your domain or even transfer your domain name. If you want anonymity don’t be cheap, spend a little money and buy your domain at PRQ. You will not get a better deal anywhere else.
